Privacy Policy
Last updated: 14 January 2026
Shelfie is a place to curate and share your book shelves. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and the choices you have.
Plain-English promise: we only want the data we need to run Shelfie, make it nicer to use, and keep it safe.
What we collect
- Account details: when you sign in, we receive basic account identifiers from our authentication provider (for example, a user ID and your email address).
- Profile & content you add: your handle, display name, shelves, notes, tags, and the books you choose to save.
- Basic technical data: information like device type, browser, and IP address (typically via standard server logs and security tooling).
- Usage/analytics (optional): we may use simple, aggregated analytics to understand what’s popular and what’s broken (for example, Vercel Analytics). We also collect limited first‑party usage telemetry (for example page views, button clicks, and feature usage) designed to avoid collecting the content you type (like full search queries, notes, or emails). We only enable optional analytics after you make a choice, and you can change it any time in Settings.
Cookies (the short version)
Shelfie uses essential cookies to keep you signed in and protect your account (via Supabase). We don’t use cookies for ads or cross-site tracking.
We also save your theme choice in your browser using localStorage so Shelfie can remember it. You can clear this any time in your browser settings.
When you click out to a retailer (for example Amazon), they may set their own cookies on their site. Those cookies are controlled by the retailer, not Shelfie.
What we don’t collect
- Payment details: Shelfie does not process payments and does not receive your card details or order information from retailers.
- Your purchases: if you click a buy link, the purchase happens on the retailer’s site. We don’t see what you buy.
Affiliate links
Some Shelfie pages include affiliate links (currently via Amazon Associates; we may add other programmes later such as Bookshop.org). If you use an affiliate link and make a purchase, Shelfie may earn a small commission — at no extra cost to you.
Retailers set and manage their own cookies and tracking on their websites. Shelfie doesn’t control those cookies, and your relationship with the retailer is governed by their privacy policy.
For more detail, see our Affiliate Disclosure.
How we use your data
- To create and secure your account.
- To save and display your shelves and profile.
- To improve performance, reliability, and product decisions.
- To prevent abuse, spam, and attacks.
Where your data is processed
Shelfie is hosted on Vercel. Our database and authentication run on Supabase. These services may process data in the UK, EU, and other regions depending on configuration and network routing.
Legal bases (GDPR)
We rely on a few common-sense bases for processing:
- Contract: to provide Shelfie to you (account, shelves, and core features).
- Legitimate interests: to keep the service secure, fix bugs, and understand overall usage in an aggregated way.
- Consent (where required): for any optional features that need it. Optional analytics is off by default until you enable it, and you can disable it in Settings.
Your choices & rights
Depending on where you live (including the UK/EU), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your data, and to object to certain processing.
If you’d like to make a request, email lukevoigt0407@gmail.com.
Data retention
We keep your data for as long as you keep your account, or as needed to operate and protect the service. If you delete your account, we’ll remove or anonymise associated personal data where practical (some records may remain in backups for a limited period).
Changes
If we make meaningful changes, we’ll update this page. If the change is big, we’ll try to be extra clear inside the product.
